What is an .MKV file?

MKV files are video files that may store home movies, short clips, movies, and TV shows. The files utilize the Matroska multimedia container format, an open-source format similar to the AVI, ASF, and MOV multimedia formats. Multimedia files that store one or more video tracks (and possibly audio and subtitle data) in the Matroska multimedia container format are known as Matroska Video (.MKV) files.

You may encounter MKV files in various ways since many video programs can save videos in the MKV format. For example, you may download a video from the Internet saved as an MKV file or export a home video from a video editor as an MKV file. You may also receive MKV videos from co-workers, family members, or friends. File Viewer Plus lets you play your MKV files and even convert the video to the MP4 format at different resolutions and bitrates.
