What is a .PEF file?

PEF files are raw images captured by various Pentax digital cameras and saved in the raw, uncompressed Pentax Electronic (PEF) format. PEF files also store metadata about the camera that captured the image, including the lens and camera settings. Pentax camera users are typically professional photographers because of the camera's ability to capture high-quality images in a format that can be accurately edited.

You most likely will only encounter a PEF file if you capture images with a Pentax digital camera. However, you also may receive a PEF image from a friend or co-worker who owns a Pentax digital camera, or you may download a photo from an image-sharing website. File Viewer Plus allows you to open and edit PEF images or convert them to another image format, such as JPEG, BMP, or TIFF.
