What is a .TS file?

TS files are video files that often store broadcast or recorded TV content, movies, or other video streams in the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) format. The format is designed for transmitting video and audio over broadcast systems such as satellite, cable, or over-the-air television. Multimedia files in this format contain compressed video, audio, and other data and are referred to as Video Transport Stream (.TS) files.

You might encounter TS files when recording TV shows with a DVR, capturing footage from a digital camcorder, or extracting content from DVDs or Blu-ray discs. TS files are also sometimes distributed online, especially in broadcast archiving or IPTV streaming contexts. File Viewer Plus can open and play TS files and convert them to more common the more common MP4 format for easier sharing, uploading, or editing.
