What is an .XLT file?

XLT files are templates created by Microsoft Excel. They store a spreadsheet, such as a quarterly financial report or spending budget, and are used for producing other spreadsheets with similar information or formatting. The file format was introduced in the 1990s and was the primary file format for saving templates until Excel 2007 when Microsoft replaced the XLT format with the XLTX format. Although XLT files are not as common as they once were, they are still used today to save Excel templates.

Microsoft Excel comes with XLT templates, but Excel users may also create their own XLT files. You may receive an XLT file attached to an email from co-workers, family members, or friends looking to share a spreadsheet with you. Or you may find old XLT files saved on your computer from previous Excel versions. File Viewer Plus is a great option for opening, editing, and converting XLT files.
