What is an .XPM file?

XPM files are image files saved in the X11 Pixmap (XPM) format, a text-based image format originally designed for use with the X Window System on Unix and Linux platforms. Unlike simple bitmap formats, XPM files support color images and store pixel data as readable character strings, making them easy to edit by hand and embed directly into source code. While this design is flexible and developer-friendly, it also results in larger file sizes compared to modern compressed image formats.

You may encounter XPM files in legacy Unix or Linux applications, older desktop environments, or software projects where icons and interface graphics were built directly into the program code. They are also common in open-source projects that value transparency and portability. File Viewer Plus can open XPM files and convert them to more widely used image formats such as PNG, JPEG, and TIFF for easier viewing, sharing, and editing.
