What is an .XPS file?

XPS files are saved in the XML Paper Specification (XPS) format. They often store documents such as contracts, forms, reports, and brochures, preserving the layout and appearance across different devices. Various applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Windows XPS Viewer, can export or open documents as XPS files.

Microsoft developed the XPS format as an alternative to PDF, introducing it with Windows Vista. While not as widely adopted as PDF, some business and government settings still use XPS files for document archiving and sharing. You may have encountered XPS files when saving documents from Microsoft Office or printing to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. File Viewer Plus is a helpful tool for opening and printing XPS files and supports converting them to more widely used formats, such as PDF, JPEG, and TXT.
